THE NIGHT OF JANUARY 16, 1938
BENNY GOODMAN AT CARNEGIE HALL
THE GOODMAN QUARTET
This was a trademark tune for the band, written by Goodman, arranger Edgar Sampson and bandleader Chick Webb.
"Stompin' at the Savoy"
This was written by Goodman, Wilson and Hampton. It underwent a long gestation of ideas, development and choruses.

THE NIGHT OF JANUARY 16, 1938
BENNY GOODMAN AT CARNEGIE HALL
This was the highlight and climax of the concert.
After a disappointing trip to the West Coast in 1936, the band was booked into the Palomar Ballroom at 3rd & Vermont in Los Angeles. A supermarket stands there today. Arranger Jimmy Mundy teamed this Louis Prima tune with Fletcher Henderson's "Christopher Columbus" for the simple reason that it sounded good. It was the tune that turned the Goodman band into a success, and it had become a ritual at their concerts.
By the end of this Carnegie Hall concert the band was playing for itself, and the result bordered on the ecstatic. The opening riff is used in a good many commercials, so it will be instantly recognizable. Solos are for clarinet (Goodman), drums (Krupa), tenor sax (Lester Young), trumpet (Harry James), and then clarinet and drums (Goodman and Krupa). Goodman's high A makes it sound like it's the end, but then something astonishing happens.
For five choruses, Jess Stacy plays the piano in the most original solo of his life. Goodman knows that something special is happening and moves the microphone closer to the piano. What happens next still makes what little hair I have left stand up, and sometimes my screen gets blurry. The crowd greets it with the respect one would find at a high mass. It's unearthly. Krupa leads the wrap up.

Maybe Chauncey is one of those names that work for both men and women, like Shirley, Marion, Claire, and a host of others. My real name is one that does.
Likey the rocky roll. :-) First I’ve heard of Budgie.

THE NIGHT OF JANUARY 16, 1938
BENNY GOODMAN AT CARNEGIE HALL
For an encore, Goodman reached back to a tune popularized by Fletcher Henderson's band nearly a decade earlier. Solos are for clarinet (Goodman) and trumpet (Harry James).
The crowd went home happy. History was made.
"Big John's Special"
We'll be back in three weeks with Rockumentary.

I’ll be sitting in aisle “T” at Benaroya Hall for the next two weekends. It’s the highlight of my winter.
