Wal-Mart said Friday it will close 269 stores across the globe, including 154 in the U.S. The world's largest retailer also will open as many as 405 stores globally in the coming fiscal year, as it shifts its focus toward Supercenters and Neighborhood Markets in profitable locations.
In all, 16,000 employees will be impacted by the store closings, about 10,000 of whom are in the U.S.
Also domestically, Wal-Mart will also close 23 Neighborhood Market stores, 12 Supercenters, seven stores in Puerto Rico, six discount centers and four Sam's Clubs.

I heard today that the stores closing in my area are not Neighborhood Markets but Walmart Express which they modeled after convenience stores, just bigger with more offerings. Express model didn’t work so they are ending them and going with more Markets which are profitable. Still made no sense building so many in a smaller population are where I am. But oh well!

Never been in a Meijer store, but WinCo Foods now has a number of locations in the Dallas area. Can't wait for them to get to Houston. Prices are 20-30% lower than Kroger.
My ex grew up in the Christian Reformed Church, but not in Grand Rapids. The joke was that there were four CRC at every major intersection. Was driving through Grand Rapids once and never saw an intersection with four CRCs, but I saw several where there were three.
Where do you live in Texas?
And odd are almost every one of them will be able to work at a store close by. It's not like there isn't a lot of employee turnover at Wal-Mart; plus they are building a lot more stores than they are closing.

Deserts.
Sawa segment out of Chicago- woman said they were losing to mini walmarts in her neighborhood, her only alternative was whole foods and she is not able to afford the cost.
She is pissed - but did not see that the local govt has caused this situation.
As to food deserts- look in any inner city for food deserts
