U.S. Proposes Spending $4 Billion to Encourage Driverless Cars Mike Spector and Mike Ramsey Updated Jan. 14, 2016 4:41 p.m. ET
The Obama administration proposed spending nearly $4 billion over a decade to make driverless cars on U.S. roads more widespread in an effort to curb fatalities and traffic jams.
The proposal, which still requires congressional approval, aims to have federal regulators work with auto makers and others to craft policies and potential rules across the U.S. for policing autonomous vehicles that move without a driver at the wheel. Regulators would also test so-called connected vehicles that talk to one another to avoid crashes in designated spots across the U.S. under the $3.9 billion budget proposal.
It isnât clear whether or when any new regulations might be adopted. Regulators said they plan to issue guidance within six months on preferred performance characteristics and testing methods for driverless cars and collaborate with state officials on policies.

Oh goody! Just what we need...
Somebody will still lend us money ?
We as nation can afford — NOT to spend that money.
Huh.
But, who is going to do their yards for them and clean their pools?
I prefer people-less government.
Insane. Has Hussein not been reading about all the researching being done in the private sector? He thinks the governemnt can do better. Why not research a better iPhone? Surely the gummint cans do better than Apple /sarc.
One might think the auto companies would work on this.
Enforcer of economic slavery of us, our children and generations not yet born -

I thought they wanted to get cars off the road! Now they want more cars?
No. Politicians are already spending more than $400B a year more than they take in, and our kids will have to pay for that massive $19T-plus debt. If car makers want to sell driverless cars, they should pay for the design costs. If buyers want driverless cars, the buyers should pay the market rate for the cars they want. There is no excuse (other than the actual one - corruption) for FedGov giving my money to these companies.
Why? The stupid chimp still has a pen and a phone, doesn't he?
A driverless car in every driveway by 2025.
IF I wuz a Teamster or a trucker, I’d be looking out for them little fellars.
4 billion to spend on something car companies were perfectly willing to spend to develop themselves so they can claim “See we created driverless cars.”
So they want the driverless cars? For what? To drive you to the nearest federal penitentiary in case you say or do something politically incorrect?
Why don’t we just pay those people to stay home? Bring them pizzas and stuff.
It is actually not a bad idea to get ahead of this.
There are a lot of communication protocols, traffic rules, signage, other legal issues, etc. that will have to be worked out over the next decade or two. The free market will take care of developing the actual technology for the cars - which are coming along quickly - but government, federal and the various states, will have to put a framework for use in place.
why not?....we have a empty White House
