"You saw the federal government sending stormtroopers with machine guns to grab a six-year-child whose mother had died trying to give him freedom and instead for us to send him back to Fidel Castro."
Texas Sen. Ted Cruz emphasized on a podcast on Tuesday his policy on immigration would be to deport those in the country illegally while adding he believes it was wrong for the Clinton administration to send Elian Gonzalzes - the child famously at the center of a heated custody battle between his Cuban father and Miami-based relatives - back to Cuba in 2000.
Cruz made the comments speaking to Fox News podcaster Todd Starnes in the context of his recent comments that he wouldn't have a deportation force to remove undocumented immigrants but would have law enforcement remove lawbreakers.
"The media are who they are," he told Starnes. "They have their agenda and they try to push it. I think any conservative has to understand that, and just be willing to speak the truth with a smile. At the same time in that, there was astonishment expressed when I said that we should enforce the law. Like why would the president possibility enforce the law? For me, I'm a Constitutionalist. The Constitution is my touchstone. Article II of the Constitution says the president must quote 'take care to faithfully enforce the law.' Federal immigration law says if someone is apprehended here illegally, they must be deported."
"As president that's exactly what I'm gonna do, I'm gonna enforce the law. We are going to deport those here illegally, secure the borders, and keep this country safe," he continued. "And that astonishes many in the media but it should be the president's responsibility, especially in an age of terror."
Cruz emphasized the frontline of terror was both in airports and the southern border. Turning to Gonzalez, who was returned to Cuba after a long custody battle, the Texas senator emphasized the episode as a sad chapter in American history.
"I suspect you are referring to Elian Gonzalez, who they actually sent goons in to snatch a six-year-old boy and wrongly return him to an oppressive Communist dictatorship. That was a sad day for America when you saw the federal government sending stormtroopers with machine guns to grab a six-year-child whose mother had died trying to give him freedom and instead for us to send him back to Fidel Castro."
just to jog the memory, more than one member of the Lazaro family who were holding Elian threatened the use of lethal force if anyone tried to peacefully enter the house to remove the child, one relative in particular quoted as saying, “they could get hurt”. I don’t agree with calling the Border Agents ‘goons’ when it was plain they were repeatedly warned to expect an armed response from the relatives. Associated Press got an warm invite, tho.
If Ted Cruz had a son, he would look like Elian Gonzalez... ;-)
He had a Castro that wanted his property back.
I wasn’t polled.
You got the leftist, pro-Castro media propaganda down pat.
Absurd ruling since there are no parental rights in Cuba. The father had no free speech to express his wishes, and the child did not grow up under his auspices once returned to Castro, his property owner (who saw to it personally he received the full Marxist brainwashing and destruction of Elian’s soul). The single most evil thing the corrupt regime of Clinton ever did, and for which cost Gore the election.
There was no “mental condition” on the part of his Florida relatives, that was a leftist media lie.
Gestapo is a better description. Reno’s Stormtroopers is another.
The same "American People" who voted for Obama twice. I'm not impressed by what the "American People" think.
I do not agree with Senator Cruz on this. The boy had to be returned to the custody of his only living parent, his father, however painful that decision was.
To the best of my knowledge the only country in the world cruel enough to take a child away from his parents for ideological reasons is Sweden, which did just that to Domenic Johansson on June 25, 2009.
It’s shocking the level of ignorance of some on this board. Are you familiar with Cuban law ? A parent does not enjoy custody of a child in Cuba in the way one does in America. Children are property of the state. Property. He was not returned to his father. He was returned to Castro, who personally saw to it the child was properly and completely indoctrinated in Marxist evil and utterly alienated from his loving relatives in Florida whose mother died getting him into their care.
THANK YOU TED!!!!
NEVER FORGET!!!
This was when our flag went into the attic, never to fly again.
His father knew he went to the USA and approved. He changed his tune with Castro's guns in his back.
This episode made me ashamed of America. Maybe I was naive. I didn't think our country could be so evil.
FL’s Elian tragedy paved the way five years later for the extermination of Terri Schiavo. What has FL done that is good?
Saw that live on television. That was the day I became a Freeper.
It was the Clinton Administration that paraded him around. As to his father, he called Lazaro Gonzales to tell him that Elian and the others were on the way. The law says that a Cuban refugee steps ashore in the U.S. They are entitled to stay. Elian was here legally.
I thought this wasn’t “part of who we are”?
Just referring in part to this statement and others that he would “take care to faithfully enforce the law.’ Federal immigration law says if someone is apprehended here illegally, they must be deported”, ....does that mean they can stay here “until and if” caught for something else (like drunk driving w/o a license) and then and only then surprise they will be sent home? Not really strong enough for me...he is selling out to govt sacks and the gopers...i hate that but that is what he seems to be implying...he is headin’ for the middle and then nothin’...you wait!
He is beginning to make some of the slightest changes and was hoping he wouldn’t be weaking at knees...lastly though...why do clear the air on the born in canada...it would benefit him...you know the dems will use it and get extra votes...he will never beat Biden nor hitlery!
