During her response to President Barack Obamaâs last State of the Union address, the South Carolina Governor recounted her own Indian-American heritage to call for fixing the countryâs broken immigration system.
Indian-American Republican Governor Nikki Haley on Wednesday faced flak from the supporters of her partyâs presidential candidate Donald Trump, as she cited her familyâs immigrant experience to warn against rhetoric that could make hardworking people feel unwelcome in the US.
During her response to President Barack Obamaâs last State of the Union address, Ms. Haley recounted her own Indian-American heritage to call for fixing the countryâs broken immigration system.
âDuring anxious times, it can be tempting to follow the siren call of the angriest voices. We must resist that temptation,â the South Carolina Governor said.
âNo one who is willing to work hard, abide by our laws, and love our traditions should ever feel unwelcome in this country,â she said.
âWe must fix our broken immigration system. That means stopping illegal immigration. And it means welcoming properly vetted legal immigrants, regardless of their race or religion.
Just like we have for centuries,â Ms. Haley said.
Mr. Trump said after the Paris terror attacks he would consider creating a national database of American Muslims and later called for a temporary halt to Muslims entering the United States.
Ms. Haleyâs remarks apparently made Mr. Trumpâs supporters upset, which was best reflected in the series of tweets made by Ann Coulter, a strong supporter of the Republican candidate.
âTrump should deport Nikki Haley,â tweeted Ms. Coulter.
âNikki Haley says âwelcoming properly vetted legal immigrants, regardless of religion.â Translation: let in all the Muslims,â she tweeted.
âThe country is lit up w/a populist fever & the GOP (Republican) responds by digging in, criticising the GOP candidates dominating polls?! NOT SMART,â radio talk show host Laura Ingraham tweeted
I know.
Agree with that plan 100%. Other religions allowed to immigrate in the future need to do so with the understanding that they must respect not try to destroy our cultural and Christians foundation while exercising their personal religion. And this is an English speaking country. No more “push whatever for English”
Trumparmerica is more about loyalty to Trump and loving him than loyalty to America.
Trump teams up with his old Clinton buddies to attack all of the Republicans. I guess that’s okay though. He uses their talking points and knows their script and talking points best.
The only reason they selected her to deliver their response is because she tore down the Confederate flag from the Confederate Memorial.
Yeah I had one threaten me with deportation for my un-Trumpsmanlike thoughts and I have roots in this country going back to the mid 1600s.
So she and Trump are on the same side on the confederate flag issue.
Carry a confederate flag to a Trump rally and you’ll get thrown out.
Better call a whammmmmmmmmmmmmmmmbulance.
Thug.
I can see how I would be an easy target for the Trump Thugs but for them to post you be deported really shows what a disgrace some of these people have become.
Thanks for the confirmation. Unfortunately.
We've had aggressive rhetoric fired with impunity incessantly for decades, including plenty of anti-white, anti-male, anti-religion, anti-'traditional’ (however that is defined). That which was defined as politically correct, or palatable to self-defined ‘progressives’ was tolerated, and this was a mistake. All aggression, verbal or non-verbal, leads eventually to counter-aggression, and we are now seeing the expected and inevitable backlash to suppressed and often understandable resentment.
It's been coming from all directions for quite awhile now, and has very deep roots in the identity politics that has been used very successfully by self-interested politicians who are more than willing to fuel racial, class, gender, and other divisions in order to create a winning coalition for themselves. In my experience, in my lifetime so far, this has almost always come from the pseudo-progressive left. What they've done is akin to creating unstable fault lines beneath the surface of society, and this is very dangerous.
Also unfortunate is that instead of finally getting our collective heads out of the sand, we have responses like Haley's that just speak in generalities about those aspects of ourselves and our society that are virtuous and that we should embrace, but gloss over the reasons why there is so much divisiveness. In the meantime, over on the left, Hillary is talking again about ‘taxing the rich’, and Bernie Sanders is also pushing divisive politics - although with a ‘kinder and gentler’ persona.
So, IMHO, irrespective of liking or not liking Trump, pinning the moniker of ‘divisiveness’ on him while ignoring the incredibly divisive politics that have led us to where we are over many decades is a sad joke. Incidentally, the fact that Haley, a woman and the child of immigrants from India, was elected governor of one of the southern states of the US in a political party that has been perpetually characterized by the left as representing bigoted white males speaks volumes.
Haely is just another Cheap Labor Express stooge
Trump just grew even more in my eyes - he really has all the right enemies....
Trump heard you type that! You’re now top of the audit list!
“Trump teams up with his old Clinton buddies to attack all of the Republicans.”
I am definitely not an old Clinton buddy and I attack all the Republicans all the time; so does anyone with a room temperature IQ. When you attack democrats, you also have to attack embedded Republicans.
Attention: American voters in Southeast Alabama & Sothwest Florida (Pensacola area). Tonight, Wednesday, January 13th, 2016....Donald J. Trump will host a massive 20,000 person rally in the Florida city of Pensacola, based on the failed SOTU speeches of both incompetent POTUS, Barack Hussein Obama and, “Turncoat” Republican Establishment RINO, Governor Nikki Haley....I am suggesting that folks who reside in that area, turn out this evening in massive numbers in full support of Donald J. Trump!!!
Mitch McConnell, Paul Ryan, John McCain, Mitt Romney, Jeb Bush, etc. all prompted Nikki Haley to directly attack a fellow Republican, DJT with slander and falsehoods, fed to her by these low life Republican Establishment traitors...who suck up to POTUS Obama and do his bidding without question, as he, his Democrat paety work to destroy this American Republic!!!
IMHO......we need a massive turnout of concerned Americans to support, back and vote for Donald J. Trump to become the POTUS nominnee of the GOP....and, then later to be elected by landslide votes to become the POTUS, in November, 2016!!!
Tough choice. Can’t stand the loud mouthed jerk from New York, and can’t trust the well spoken GOPe apologist from South Carolina.
That’s it. Both of of you leave.
Jeri Ryan...who's sealed testimony against her allegedly perverted husband was responsible for creating Senator Barack Obama of Illinois. Crazy.
whose
Nikki is wrong on the flag, and should know better. Trump is an ignorant New York blowhard, who thinks West Palm Beach is the “South.”
Nikki is opposed for (wrong) ideological reasons. Trump is opposed because he really is a politician and will say what he thinks appeals to the most people.
