They’ve left no notes behind. And it’s fairly certain they’re not doing it for the insurance money. But “suicidal deer†are apparently such a big problem in Paxton, Ill. that its county is installing signs to warn drivers.
Calling the deer “suicidal,†of course, may be something of a misnomer. More likely, they just don’t know to be cautious around speeding vehicles with bright headlights. But whatever the reason, it’s certainly an issue in Paxton: 33 vehicle collisions with deer were reported in 2015, according to The Paxton Record.
Button Township Highway Commissioner Ron Hilligoss stumbled onto the idea of the eye-catching signs during a conversation with his nephew.
“My nephew sent me a picture of one of these signs out in Colorado about six months ago,†Hilligoss told The Record. “He texted it to me, and I thought it was really a good thing because it gets your attention. So we had had a Ford County Highway Department meeting and I said, ‘Can you get me these signs?’â€

A cop came, and took her to a 24-hr vet, for which I was very grateful. When I called the vet the next day, he said he had to put her down, b/c 3 legs were broken. I felt badly.
Felt bad that I never got the venison. Yet thankful, only the headlight was broken.

We go to Churchill Downs for the races in Black Friday every year. This year, I bet there were 15-20 dead deer along the side of I-65 on the 30 or so miles we’re on it.
IF the TPWD would give us a few more deer tags every season, we might be able to fix this problem. :)
After killing 50-60 in my life, I can attest to that. Strangely, they are really just tasty rodents with (some) a deadly weapon on their head. I think every hunter has a story about the one they thought was dead, but was only stunned.
