US Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro and Israeli Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked met on Sunday to discuss contentious draft legislation to toughen rules on Israeli rights groups which receive the majority of their funds from abroad.
Shapiro sought to receive more information regarding the controversial bill after US officials last week expressed concerns about the dangers it could pose to a âfree and functioning civil society.â

Obama’s interference in Israel’s internal affairs is out of place.
I would have actually gone further and banned foreign funding for anti-Israel Israeli NGOs.
As it stands, the proposed law does not curb their freedom of speech. It simply requires them to disclose who is paying for their activities inside Israel.
Transparency in funding disclosure and freedom of speech do not clash.
