All politicians try to tell you what you want to hear...and most people are usually skeptical about them ,but Trump has raised this to a new level and sold it to a lot of people. Also he really has no record to look at to see if he is or has been consistent in any regard. In short the whole thing is based on words and nothing else

I’m wearing a Donald Trump brand shirt. It’s made in Bangladesh. Why should I take any of his promises seriously? Maybe he just wants to shut out the Chinese competition for his Bangladesh made stuff.
