WASHINGTON -
Canadian-born Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, continued to come under fire Sunday over whether he is a ânatural born citizenâ eligible to be U.S. president.
Cruz, a lawyer, has said that his citizenship is âsettled lawâ and on CNNâs State of the Union on Sunday said it is âclear and straightforwardâ that he became a U.S. citizen at birth in Calgary because his mother was a U.S. citizen. His presidential primary campaign even released his motherâs U.S. birth certificate over the weekend - after denying she had become a Canadian citizen, although her name appears on a 1974 Canadian federal election voter roll.
But Republican national frontrunner Donald Trump, who stoked the issue last week by saying that Democrats would sue if Cruz was the nominee and ensnare the election, continued to press his case on several Sunday news programs that the foreign birth was âa problemâ that the Supreme Court ought to decide.
Asked about his eligibility as a citizen on CNN Sunday, Cruz said, âThe substance of the issue is clear and straightforward. As a legal matter, the Constitution and federal law are clear that the child of a U.S. citizen born abroad is a natural-born citizen.â
Cruz was born in Calgary, Alberta, in 1970 when his Cuban father, Rafael Cruz, and American-born mother, Eleanor Cruz, were living and working in the oil industry. However, his father became a Canadian citizen, as Rafael Cruz told NPR in 2013. And both his and Cruzâs motherâs names appear on Canadian voter rolls in May, 1974, in documents obtained by McClatchy. Only Canadian citizens are eligible to vote in that country.

I know.
I’m going for Trump too and this “birther” stuff has less than NOTHING at all to do with my choice.
*snicker*
Ah, I get it.
You're convinced Cruz has a silver hammer.
Time will tell.
It is an incredibly mean and extremely successful tactic.
I would like to see it go to the court for decision, as I know we’ll be faced with it again.
“What about the situation of Post #38 regarding the princes of Queen Noor of Jordan? They too are NBC?”
No, she had to renounce her U.S. citizenship in order to marry the king and adopt the Sunni religion in Jordan as the new Queen and consort. Her children did not inherit U.S. citizenship.
This has been been slung around by Dems/libs on FB already, for many months.
It will inevitably be a “big issue”.
*How* the Dems/libs manage to suppress their collective, hypocritical gag reflex, is beyond me.
They certainly had no qualms about *their* freak’s dubious origins.
Both Rafael Sr. and mother, Eleanor were naturalized as Canadian citizens before “Ted’s” birth. The both lived in Canada four years before “Ted” was born December, 1970. Both father and mother became Canadians and that would have been forbidden by the Founders.
From wikipedia regarding Queen Noor and her American citizenship. “Born Lisa Halaby in Washington, D.C. in 1951, she became a Jordanian citizen upon her marriage to King Hussein of Jordan in 1978. She claims she automatically lost U.S. citizenship by obtaining Jordanian citizenship, but that she did not renounce it.[251]” Thus in the eyes of the US Gov she is still an American citizen and passed on NBC to her children, who are currently Princes and Princesses in Jordan and according to the Cruz NBC stalwarts, should be able to move to the US, fulfill the 14 year residency requirement and able to run for President as well as constitutionally hold that office.
This is the example that needs to be pointed to. If the above argument holds water, then Arab (Muslim) Princes of Jordan have the right to become an American President, then so does Sen Cruz.
Do you have anything to back that up?
Cruz’s campaign says Darragh went to Canada in 1967. When did Cruz go to Canada?
Cruz told NPR that he became a Canadian citizen. When?
Do we know. for certain, that his mother became a naturalized Canadian citizen ?
Yes, she did renounce her American citizenship when she became queen consort.
They might ask to become citizens through their mother, but they can't be president!
This is law - Constitutional law - right up his alley. And he's Jumpin' Jack Flash.
It is best to be underestimated.
Time will tell.
Yes, indeed it will.
I think you are wrong Whiskey X, based on a bit of research, she claims her citizenship lasted, but did not renounce it. The US Gov says she did not renounce it, thus she is still an American citizen and conferred NBC on her princeling which can now move to the US and run for President in 14 years and constitutionally become President according to the logic of some here on the board.
That’s what I assumed. Thanks for the info!
No, Cruz figured that Obama got away with it, so he could too, is all. Or he didn’t think about it at all!
