Contrast that with Cruz who had to apply for derivative citizenship on the basis of his mother It was not automatic, but rather, an option. Cruz was a Canadian citizen at birth thru jus solis, i.e., birthright citizenship. It would be interesting to learn exactly when Cruz received his citizenship approval, whether thru registering his birht at the consulate and/or applying for a passport. Or whether it was done in the states when he returned at the age of 4.

FWIW, Ted says he was a US citizen at first breath, but I suppose that would be difficult for him to know for certain on day 1. As smart as he is, he may have been born with a legal brief tucked in his diapers.
