Police on Monday had said the suspects appeared to be of "Arab or North African descent," sparking fears on social media they were among around 1 million asylum seekers who have flooded Germany this year. Held told NBC News that it was too early to tell if the suspects were recent arrivals.
Amid the fears and outrage, Cologne city officials were meeting Tuesday to discuss further measures to prevent similar incidents -- especially in light of upcoming carnival festivities.

If things get bad enough, the population will put somebody in charge that will promise a final solution to the problem.
I’ve been through that train station several times. It is the center of Cologne. The Hauptbahnhof is directly across the plaza from the beautiful DOM Cathedral, the best and largest example of gothic Church-architecture in Europe. Cologne’s concert hall is just past that, and the plaza connects to the old center of the city and shopping district.
The thought of 1000 Muslim thugs running wild through there is absolutely sickening.
The stairs do connect the Bahnhof plaza to the street level around the Dom, but they go up to a plaza built over the Trankgasse on the north side of the Cathedral.
You are absolutely right. Until their addiction to leisure is addressed, they will take anything that comes their way as long as the time off is still happening. And it doesn’t matter to them if that means sitting around in their apartments cowering in fear—they’ve already given up so much for ample “free time”, what’s a little more?
