Donald Trump was a guest on Jimmy Kimmel's show when the late-night host asked him a simple question:

"Isn't it un-American and wrong to discriminate against people based on their religion?"

Trump replied with a long-winded but brilliantly structured one-minute answer. Evan Puschak, founder of NerdWriter, analyzed all 220 words and determined Trump's sentence structure and basic word choices give him a leg up on other presidential candidates when speaking to America.

Here's the answer, with key words highlighted by Puschak:

Of the 220 words Trump uses in his Kimmel answer, 172 (78%) are only one syllable long. He ends sentences with words he wants to emphasis and speaks using a 4th grade level vocab and often uses incorrect grammatical structure.

Use guys get what like you know I’m trying to say here because, well, you know this is serous and a lot of people are angry or sum thin. And, well, like you know what I mean? Stuff like that sort of. ;- )

“Bedlam” is a 4th grade word?

“What the root cause is” is grammatically correct and “what is the root cause” isn’t?

Summary: Trump uses simple words and sentence structure to bring about a point that anyone can understand. His point is clear and concise and doesn’t confuse anyone in to what he is saying.

He...speaks using a 4th grade level vocab and often uses incorrect grammatical structure.

He must be expecting the fourth-graders to come out to vote.

Trump knows his audience.

His point is clear and concise

I've never seen a major political candidate who was less clear and concise myself. Trump's speeches are long, rambling, stream of consciousness riddles.

More than 20% of adults read at or below the fifth-grade level.

Most blockbuster novels are written at the 7th grade level.

So yeah, he’s communicating in a way most voters wil understand.

The answer is that he uses a lot of basic one syllable words(70+ percent) and tends to end sentences with punch words like “dead.” He speaks to the people in easily understood and retainable language and also speaks to the people directly instead of reciting a prewritten script.
Basically that’s it.
In other words, Trump is a genius at communication. The people understand him and remember what he says. Reagan (the great communicator) did much the same.

It’s effective marketing, trying to reach and appeal to the most number of people.

It’s smart to use smart words, but it’s not always wise.

Trump is going for wise instead of smart.

I've noticed the same thing myself. However what works in person doesn't necessarily translate well to the written page. If you try to read what Trump said, it's all grammatically incorrect, stream-of-consciousness stuff. But while that's not the way people usually talk when giving a formal speech, it is the way most people speak in ordinary conversation. And that's one of Trump's greatest strengths--getting you to feel like he's talking to you around the water cooler in the office.
