The juxtaposition of two American military men who could stand in the same courtroom in the coming months couldn't be set in more stark relief.
Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl faces a general court-martial for walking off of his base in eastern Afghanistan in 2009. Bergdahl spent five years in Taliban captivity, where he was tormented, before being freed in a controversial prisoner exchange last year.
Jimmy Hatch, a Navy SEAL senior chief who led a platoon into a fierce battle to try to rescue Bergdahl, was shot and badly wounded on that mission. Beside him, service dog Remco lay mortally wounded, after running through a hail of bullets at two Taliban fighters hiding in a ditch, exposing their whereabouts.

Agree.
Probably a reason that this Lieutenant Colonel will never be called General. But, he was the Article 32 Investigating Officer who performs functions similar to a Grand Jury. He examines the evidence, considers the circumstances and determines if the evidence warrant court martial. He can recommend the type of Court Martial, but the Convening Authority makes the call. This guy is likely watching network news more than he ought to do.
As a no-name grunt many years ago, if I were in charge right now I would make it a requirement that every JAG officer serve on-line as a line grunt behind a section or platoon sgt. for a year before being allowed into a military courtroom as a JAG officer.
This is why Hillary would have wanted to join the Marines, so she could pad her resume and do sh!t similar to this.
How can Military.com not get Senior Chief correct?
My dad was a Combat Engineer in N. Africa, Sicily, Anzio, and the Winter War in '43-44. After hostilities concluded, he didn't have enough good points to get out, so he lateraled to the JAGs and supervised the Greek elections while being shot at by Communists.
He wouldn't have put up with any of the current JAG nonsense for a nanosecond.
Bravo. Hear, hear
My War College classmate was a USMC JAG Officer. The Marines detailed him to a tour as an Infantry Rifle Company Commander while a serving JAG Officer. Smart.
I wonder if this General Abrams is any kin to the former Creighton Abrams?
I would make it a requirement that all members of Congress, the Senate and the President be veterans.
No, he wasn’t a rifle company commander WHILE a Jag officer. Rifle company commanders can show up with backgrounds in many MOS fields.
But I assure you, he had no, none, zero JAG duties when he commanded a company.
You guys know much more than I do about these matters.
What do you think are the odds that the Lt. Colonel was directly pressured?
As pointed out, MG Dahl is a JAG. His role was to lead the investigation and no doubt drafted and approved any recommendation that may have been in this report. He testified to his findings and opinion in the Article 32 Proceeding. But from a technical standpoint, he did not make a Court Martial recommendation to the Convening Authority.
I believe that he should leave the Army and become a prosecutor in Baltimore.
What will you bet that Obama pardons this pile of detritus on his last day in office?
He tried to influence the court. There is no doubt about that. I have seen that kind of thing in real time in the Army. Some commanders are not fit to command and use their rank to advance their political views at the expense of troops.
But I agree with you on Baltimore. Perfect.
Certainly, he held an Infantry MOS while in the job and had no JAG duties. We are tripping over differing terminology between Marines and Army. We call it detailing because every officer is assigned to a basic branch, but can serve in other MOS. Since the Marines don’t have a branch, you are correct. But, he was a JAG before a company commander and returned to JAG afterwards. Good idea.
Presidents Jefferson, John Adams, Herbert Hoover, do not agree.
I doubt that he was pressured, but very likely he was influenced by this Major General JAG. He may have let the Art 32 Officer what the political climate wanted.
A pajama party with a rope for Berg and treasonous activity involving a gallows and/or firing squad for the “pretender”.
Dahl, as a JAG, never commanded as much as a latrine detail, ever.
Maybe should suffer the same fate as the 'Political Officer' in the scene from 'Hunt for Red October'?
