This piece reeks of leftist snarkiness. I wouldn't disagree that personal appearance sometimes merits criticism. E.g. we freely criticize Madame Clinton's Mao-suits.

As for the writer's glib assertion that Cruz has a "messiah complex" ... here's proof of a messiah-complex-to-beat-all- messiah-complexes:

Obviously that quote was 0, and yes, there was an over the top quality to it. Back then, the media were grappling with the novelty of the first black president, and the stultifying effect it had on their journalistic impulses prevented any serious examination of their candidate, something many of them have lamented over the years...
