George Will is warning that if the GOP nominates Donald Trump for president, it would be the "end" of the conservative party.
âConservativesâ highest priority now must be to prevent Trump from winning the Republican nomination in this, the GOPâs third epochal intraparty struggle in 104 years,â he writes in a new Washington Post column Thursday.

No here’s the crux. The people who will destroy the GOP will be people like George Will and an establishment that refuses to come together for the sake of unity. Its those who won’t stay on message and wont support the nominees. They are supreme hypocrites they use us and abuse us and then don’t show up when the more conservative or less establishment candidate wins. Sorry Georgie its time for you and your whimpish style of politics that lets the left steal have your lunch money so you get a seat at their table is dead.
Will said much that same of Reagan in the 70s, and did not support him in the primaries in 80.
It has been said the Will and his ilk were the subject of Reagan’s ‘Let them go their way’ speech at CPAC ‘75.
Personal note: if you have never read that speech, or if it has been a while, I strongly recommend it. 40 years later and still true.
I don’t pay attention to anyone who wears a dead squirrel on his head.
I wonder who’s campaign staff his wife is working on now?
This is as much about a "conservative" winning as it is about an "outsider" winning ... neither outcome is acceptable to the ruling class!
As Trump and/or Cruz continue to prevail through the primaries, the hysterics of the GOPEs/RINOs -- right alongside the socialist Democrats -- will reach stratospheric heights and the wailing will become deafening.
The Oligarchs are worried that they are losing their stranglehold on the Democrat and Repiublicsm parties.
LOL!
Yes - Repubbies are the Washington Generals.
Great metaphor.
Hey, George — Maybe some of us are sick of the following:
1. Nominating people who won’t fight and (indeed) seem pre-programmed to lose. Dole, McCain and Romney come to mind.
2. Electing people who say one thing and do another thing. Now, it may turn out that Trump is one of those people, but I’m willing to roll the dice.
3. Electing people who, while not dishonest, are totally ineffectual. Trump seems to be extremely effective.
4. Electing people who let the Press play them like a fiddle & continually apologize for merely existing. In contrast, Trump plays the Press like a fiddle. It is a refreshing change.
Trump will SAVE conservatism by destroying it’s worst enemy, the current GOPe leadership.
Once the John McCain faction of the GOP leadership is swept from power, real conservatives can take over.
Let’s take back the argument and pour some salt in an old wound the establishment would like to forget.
Don’t say ‘good riddance’...
Say:
Let Them Go Their Way
So what are you actually saying here Georgie Boy? Are you saying that THE PEOPLE never actually picked the candidate before?
Well if the GOP stopped trying to out socialist the socialists then they might have some of concerned. As it is now I say good riddance.
Georgie, the GOP has already been destroyed.
“I am physically revulsed by this statement”
Indeed. The sole purpose of a political party is to get candidates elected to office.
Will advocates openly what many of us have suspected, that the “status quo” of big government and contra-conservative principles is what the GOP has turned into.
So Will seeks to align his version of the Republican party (as we have all suspected as well) with the mission of the Democrat party - to elect Democrats.
+1
"Trump nomination would destroy GOPe"
There...that makes it plain, and that is a good thing.
Folks like you just do not get it...even at this late date.
You are completely out of touch and not plugged into the frustration, the anger...and the rage that is fueling God-fearing, solid conservative and constitutional American people.
We voters, the heart and soul of the GOP are madder than hell at the broken promises and the lies from the GOPe.
We have given them opportunity after opportunity. delivering majorities to them...AND NOTHING CHANGES!
It has become painfully clear that simply electing more GOP politicians that the GOPe serves up to us is NOT the answer. They promise one thing, and then do another. over and over and over again!
Paul Ryan's latest budget deal with the DNC is the perfect example...and the absolute straw that has broken the camels back.
No more!
We are going to start running those bastards out of town on a rail, dripping tar and covered in feathers...and at that they will be getting off light.
why?
As I said, it is simple. We are madder than hell and outraged at their antics.
We love this country and we know what it needs, and that is representatives who will keep their promises and deliver the conservative, constitutional actions this nation needs...and it not the GOPe or anyone holding to that brand.
If that is Cruz...so be it. If that is Trumpo...so be it.
So you see, George, the whole point is to destroy the GOPe and...
BURN IT DOWN TO THE GROUND
We will build back a GOP on top of the ashes that will keep its word, turn this nation around, and actually follow the Party Platform.
How about that Georgie?
The Bushs, the Ryans, the Boehners, the McConnels, the Grahams, the McCains, et., etc. have had their day...and each of them have made nice with those who are destroying this country and taken their own constituents for fools.
As I say...no more!
You and others like Krauthammer may not believe it. You may not like it. You may prognosticate against it and continue to serve your masters.
Too bad.
Get the hell out of the way or get bowled over with them.
Bonus!
Trump’s not my first choice (Cruz), but the level of GOPe hysteria has moved into Monty Python territory. These people are as insane as liberals.
