The Dollar Store in a nearby town (Damariscotta) forbids its employees from saying Merry Christmas. When a friend was told that by the check out clerk he stood at the end of the check out area for a while and wished a Merry Christmas to the customers.
That's not an odd event down here in S. MS.
Even grade school teachers aren't afraid to let on that they are Christians and Pro-America.
I even had a college professor who was quick with a "God Bless You" if someone sneezed in class.
