We are still feeling the effects financially of Emancipation.

It was a grand mess all around.

War was going to happen regardless. If the Civil War had occurred decades earlier, say the early 1830s, President Jackson would have been no less obstinate in keeping the union together (and as said, he would’ve hanged the leaders, including his own 1st term Vice-President Calhoun).
