The research has been done by Dr. Thomas Sowell, among others. Black students are consistently placed in academic programs above their level of preparation, with the result that their graduation rate is far lower than that of students admitted to the same programs without race preference.
The real-world experiment has also been done. When California’s state universities eliminated racial preference, the graduation rate of blacks and Hispanics increased throughout the system, because they were admitted to campuses for which they were academically prepared. (I believe their overall percentage in the state university system also increased, but wouldn’t swear to it.)
