Oh, I forgot about that. Pretty soon, you’ll be seeing Cruz compared to “Seabuiscit,” who always ran way back in the pack until the final stretch.

First, congratulations to Mr. Trump for running a great campaign, and for helping frame the election on better terms. We certainly won't be hearing about free prescriptions for old people this time around.

Second, it was only a few weeks ago that Cruz was hovering around 7-9%. Cruz and Trump are taking defections and undecideds. Once space is created between Cruz and the rest of the pack, as it has in this poll, he will get some "Not Trump" votes. (Trump will also get some "Not Cruz" votes from those who don't care for Cruz' evangelical veneer.)

Is there time for Cruz to perform well in the SEC contest. Sure. Look at 2012, when many of us swung from Cain, to Perry, to Gingrich, to Santorum to try to stop Romney. Both Gingrich and Santorum voters swung to one or the other as needed to try to stop Romney. This time, it's the other side swinging from John Ellis Bush, to Fiorina, to Kasich, to Rubio, and now to Christie!

As it inevitably boils down to a two or three man race after Iowa and New Hampshire, numbers for both Cruz and Trump are likely to go up. Cruz will probably go up more than Trump, but it is unknown if he can surpass Trump.

If Cruz went from 5% to 25% overnight, he'd flare out as many have before. Cruz' efforts are largely at the ground level, and he has yet to seriously tap his adequate warchest for advertising. Spending your money earlier for an early poll surge is a chump's game, as Scott Walker learned, due to his inept campaign staff and some poor decisions on his part. Ted Cruz is no chump.
