Ted Cruz votes against amendment that would block Donald Trump's proposed religious test for Muslims

Four Republican senators .. including presidential candidate and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz.. voted against a resolution that affirmed there would be no religious test for people entering the United States.

The non binding amendment was attached to an unrelated security bill and read that, "It is the sense of the Senate that the United States must not bar individuals from entering into the United States based on their religion, as such action would be contrary to the fundamental principles on which this Nation was founded."

Cruz did not attend the meeting, so it was not immediately clear why he opposed the resolution that was aimed at formally rejecting Donald Trump's widely panned plan to bar Muslims from entering the country.

However, Cruz hasn't joined the chorus of other candidates in criticizing the ban, having said instead that he "[commends] Donald Trump for standing up and focusing America's attention on the need to secure our borders." According to Politico, "Several Democrats grinned visibly when Cruz's proxy vote of 'no' was cast, with one uttering into a hot mic: 'Ohhh yeah.'"

The main difference between Trump, Cruz and Paul on the issue is the language they use. Cruz and Paul were first to address the issue with legislation for a 3 year moratorium on allowing immigrants from countries that have active ISIS and Al Queda cells. Trump frames it as a ban on Muslims. Cruz and Paul make the issue potential terrorist.

I believe that Cruz’s vote today as in support of his call for refugees to be Christian’s whose lives are in danger from ISIS.

As an American citizen shouldn’t Syed Rizwan Farook’s bloody crime be described as one of treason? And shouldn’t his family be also tried for treason if they in fact knew/were complicit in the crimes?

Aye on both counts.

That’s what I mean about it being deceptive. The people voting no are not asking for a religious test but for a security test. The terrorists are Islamic, therefore security demands taking into account religion. But is is not because of religion. It’s because of security. They blame lies with the terrorists, not Trump or any of the “no” voters on this proposal.

It is time to stop accepting the ridiculous notion that Islam is a religion. Religions are not founded on murder and war as holy tenets. Death cults are.

The simple fact is that there have been religious and political tests since the earliest settlers.

Once things were up and running the Pilgrims who landed at Plymouth imposed strict requirements for joining their growing settlement.

In 1917 when my great grandfather signed his letter of intent for citizenship he had to swear (to God) in writing that he wasn’t an anarchist, a polygamist or a believer in the practice of polygamy.

As far as Trump is concerned, they’re attacking him on the 1 or 2 things we agree with him on while ignoring all the liberal things they agree with him on like subsidies and larger government.

Well once again the "News media" demonstrate themselves hysteric shameless liars.

Article 6 US Constitution The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the members of the several state legislatures, and all executive and judicial officers, both of the United States and of the several states, shall be bound by oath or affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.

Even better, why not halt all immigration for the time being. H1 Visas, everything, except very occasionally for humanitarian reasons, and then only from non-terrorist nations.

A religious test ‘for entry’ is not the issue they're making of it.... because Islam is not a race nor a religion it's a set of ideas.....

So 16 just showed how totally ignorant they are.

I’m just saying this came up because of security. Everyone knows it. The left and the GOPe think they can become instantly pro religious freedom and reap some political points. They are such phonies. They are constantly bashing religious freedom from every angle. The only religion they like is paganism, satanism, and terrorism.

This was so utterly stupid!.....Islam isn;t a race nor a religion....it’s a pack of ‘ideas’ hiding behind the PJ skirts of Powerful Imams who want to retain their power and wealth into one generation after another.

Without Political Islamic rule these nations would fall ...the ONLY thing that unites them is Islam and the Leaders know this....that is why they can’t handle freedom....Islam is a “collective” set of ideas and rules to maintain a stronghold on the populations.

If it weren’t for islamic terrorism and general barbarism nobody would have a major problem with them coming here. However during wartime its insanity to take in the people we’re fighting against.

I have no problem with taking Middle Eastern Christians in as long as they are vetted and sponsored by those who are already here.

Cruz did not even attend the symbolic meeting, he voted for one reason, to continue to ride Trump’s coattails, despite saying that it ‘wasn’t his plan’. Very transparent.

Muslims in the best of times are barbaric 7th century animals who actively work to stay that way.

Incompatible with the United states constitution and with civilization.

I’m for that, that’s what Coulter is saying as well. I would probably allow for family members of citizens to visit unless the family members are from a terror producing country. I doubt Mary O’Malley from Ireland who wants to visit her sister in Ohio is going to pose the same threat as Mohammed Dirka Dirka from Syria who wants to visit his sister in New york.
