France is planning on shutting down dozens of mosques, and a top Islamic leader is staunchly supporting the move.
Hassan El Alaoui, who's in charge of all Muslim prison chaplains in France, told Al Jazeera anywhere between 100 and 160 Muslim worship centers will be closed.
He added that the mosques would be shuttered "because they are run illegally without proper licenses, they preach hatred or use takfiri speech," meaning they denounce other Muslims for not being truly adherent to the Quran.
The crackdown on extremist speech would affect roughly 4 to 6 percent of the countries 2,600 total mosques. Three have already been closed following the Nov. 13 attacks on Paris that left 130 people dead.
But while some Muslims like El Alaoui are concerned about the rhetoric being used at mosques, others are concerned closing houses of worship infringes on civil liberties.
In France, emergency powers, like those enacted after the Paris attacks, are supposed to last just 12 days. But the Senate voted to extend that period to three months. Since that vote, police have searched over 2,200 homes and detained more than 200 people.
The director of Amnesty International's European program said the powers are only supposed to be used in the case of an imminent threat but that "much more of this was preventative and speculative rather than linked to intelligence on [the attacks]."

Being a muslim means being adherent to the Quran....and that means following the Quran's commands on Jihad.

If a Baptist church is recruiting, harboring, radicalizing and distributing mass murdering terrorist manuals, by all means get a warrant, search, seize, arrest the leaders and members and shut it down. Just as we would subversive Muslim terrorist organizations.
It makes it more difficult for them to gather in one place and gives them fewer places to store weapons. Wish we could do that here but Christians churches will be shut down before mosques will.
What happens after they are “closed” and “shuttered”?
Do they just reopen in a couple of months when the state of emergency expires, and the news cycle blows over?
Do they rename themselves, or just put someone else’s name on the signature line?
The lack of detail makes me think that they are just blowing smoke for political cover, and not really shutting it down.
Seizing mosques and demolishing them, or selling them to others who will not use it for islam would be a different story, but I have not heard a word about that. I assume that a new front man, a so-called “moderate” will take over, just re-open them and go back to business as usual.

Not in my mind. I would look at it as 100 less islam command and control centers to shut down. islam will fade away or be erased if humans continue to develop naturally.
It’s a step in the right direction.
It’s a sad day when France becomes the beacon of courage and decision while the US quivers about a few “hurtful” words.

Anything that doesn't start with sacking this person (and any Muslim prison chaplains) probably won't affect the problem. Want to go worship in your death cult? Don't commit crimes.

It's a hell of a feeling knowing Obama's policies created Isis, either on purpose or leaving Iraq and creating the vacuum. It's also a crime that each American has the anxiety and worry of just waiting for the next attack. I'm so mad I could just spit. . Damn it, most of this was preventable, going back to Clinton.
One is a violent political movement, the Baptists are Christians that helped to build the country. It is a profound difference.
When France is tougher than the U.S. then you know something is terribly wrong.
Why do you think it would be without due process? And in fact I can recall a Baptist church being padlocked not long ago because they had a school in it.
According to NRO, there are currently 296 Catholic parishes in NYC (down from 409 ten years ago). There were 285 mosques as of 2014.
Better not close those mosques! You might end up on the UK’s “banned list” for being a bigot.
