Nothing sad about it. This has been the truth for a long time, but has only now been openly admitted - the GOP stopped being the opposition party to the D’s for probably the last 20 years, perhaps since Reagan retired.
This is why the GOP has such a visceral reaction to the base pining for another Reagan. The GOP, in my opinion, say Reagan as an error on their part. Reagan was supposed to be a vacuous actor/amiable dunce and turned on to be a great manager and a shrewd judge of people and staff. He also turned out to be a master communicator, and had some dynamite speechwriters.
That he defeated the Soviets without firing a shot is probably the most astounding military victory in the history of warfare. I grew up in that era, and the conventional wisdom was either we were all going do die, or we would always be in some form of low intensity war with the Soviets.
Nobody in 1979 could have predicted the outcome. As time goes on, Obama’s treatment by history will include the astounding squandering of that victory over the Soviets.
