Gotta be VERY careful doing that, too. The moment you give the President, the Supreme Court, or some government bureaucrat the power to declare what is and is not a "religion" that is protected under the First Amendment, you risk giving that person the power to declare ANYTHING a non-religion with no First Amendment protections. So, if you're going to do that, there had better be strict criteria and an airtight process.

But for centuries it’s been called “a religion”. No it needs to be said that any religion, that has bylaws that call for murder of non followers be excluded. That might work.
