What is an AR????

The civilian equivalent of an M-16. They're illegal in California, I believe, somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

CA tried to make them illegal, but inventive folks, reading the law, have defised legal semi-auto versions for their enjoyment.

Legal with ten round only mags and a button requiring a tool to remove mags.

They're legal. Just severely restricted based on "evil" features. AR's manufactured for the CA market have installed what's known as a "bullet button" which means the standard magazine release button is encased in a metal shroud and requires a tool (like a bullet) to be inserted to release the magazine.

Some rifles have a fixed and welded mag in place meaning they can only be loaded with a top-loading stripper clip. 10 rounds max for both variants.
