For a time there were even two separate franchises called the Roughriders in a league of only eight teams. I remember there was a South Park episode that made light of that.

My theory is that Red Blacks is an homage to the RCMP, the classic Mountie with the red tunic and black jodhpurs.
I tried out my theory on a recent fishing trip to Saskatchewan and the natives were underwhelmed

There was a famous Canadian army unit known as the Red Blacks during WWI and WWII. With Ottawa being the nation’s capital it fits. Lame, but it fits.
