That nuclear heat sure does thaw relations real quick.
“Iâm not sure you scramble F15s and shoot someone down in 30 seconds.”
It was an F16 and it was already airborne. That said, this is either a situation where the Turkish pilot was given autonomy to fire on anything he thought was in Turkish airspace, or he was “freelancing.” The Russians are in the process of dropping the economic hammer on Turkey, and maybe they’re going to start interdicting the oil truck caravans at the Turkish border. Any way you slice it, Turkey Effed with the wrong guys. I just hope NATO doesn’t “help” Turkey in any way. And I wll bet you every power in the area knows exactly where both aircraft were throughout the event.
The Russians may be angry, but they also know they’ve been playing with fire for weeks along the Syria-Turkey border. They finally got burned, and I suspect both sides are going to be sitting down separately to change their protocols so this doesn’t happen again.
“And the helicopter they shot down ...
didnât know whose it was either?”
Reports said that Syrian rebels, not Turks did that one. It’s a freeking free fire zone.
Idiots
Now they pay the price for being ragger despots
Perspective from the Russian point of view.

Putin is still going to blow up the grandest mosque in Turkey.
Oh please...not gonna happen. In the initial hours of the incident, it appeared the Russians were trying to give the Turks an “out” by claiming the plane was shot down from the ground by a manpad. I think the Turks didn’t want to claim otherwise, so now the Russians have to show “something”. As a reminder, the Turks are in NATO and if they did an overt aggression over Turkey, all of NATO would be required to respond. This will blow over quickly, IMHO. They were caught intruding too many times with a military aircraft over NATO terrirory.
I don’t think this is correct. Listening to Lavarov it sounds like he may be considering accepting the legitimacy of the Kurds which in the end of the day would be a fairly big blow to Turkey. Militarily they aren’t going to start a war but You can hit Syria from the black sea through Turkish airspace. It would be a fairly straight forward message of aggression that no one will really respond to. I don’t know that they’ll do that but it’s definitely an option if they want to send a stronger message. Also, Russia and Turkey have a lot of economic ties and they are going to be revisited. A leader can do a lot for his Country if he loves it. I guess you haven’t had that in few years now so maybe you are forgetting. Strongly worded emails are not the only approach
Not sure hitting targets in the Turkish safe zone is doing nothing. There are other options too (read my comment below). That all being said, they aren’t John McCain and Linda Ghraham who may very well have started WWIII over this
No one is afraid of Article 5. NATO isn’t eager to start a war because Russia crossed into Turkey airspace, that’s ridiculous. They can’t afford to be complete idiots. I suspect if Russia bombed a target inside Turkey it would be little more than a diplomatic dust up. It’s not like they can sanction Russia economically much more than they already have over Ukraine.
Means more than you think. I realize nobody wants a war due to Russia’s aircraft crossing into Turkey, but Russia isn’t in a strong position vs Turkey militarily in that area and everyone knows that. A squadron of fighter/bombers with long supply lines doesn’t bode well for them. Economic situations less than this made the USSR fall, they aren’t suicidal either.
Turks promised NATO that they would make up a face saving story.
And the first part of that sentence that was not uttered aloud was probably something like, "I am going to make damned sure you"
I wouldn’t doubt they were instructed to shoot then next one down that crossed over, since they’ve been bombing our “allies”. To put some heat on Russia about consequences.
Did they think it was one of ours?
I saw reports that it was 17 seconds.
