Bobby Layne -

. . . drank six days and nights a week and played football on Sunday. Everything is much more complicated nowadays and if it were me, I wouldn't drink my entire career - too much money at stake

At one point Layne’s team was so bad he was joking about having a stiff drink at halftime.

Substitutions are the big thing.
Used to be the eleven best players took the field and stayed there.
Now there are players who only play on certain downs and certain situations.
Third and long is a glaring example.

Fatso Donovan told the joke about Gino Marchetti asking him, at the line, “what defense we in! Fatso, what defense we I’m? “
Donovan answered “the same damned defense we been playing the last seven years!”.
