Was Jeb Bush SuperPAC's big advertising push in early autumn the least effective multi-million dollar advertising campaign ever? Jimmy Carter's campaign spent $50 million back in the late 70s and 1980 and a sitting President got swamped.
There are loads of losers that have millions spent by 'Political Expert Consultants' {taking a piece of the action} making sure that you can't lose. Happens every cycle.

He DID manage to beat Edward M. Kennedy with a good chunk of that money in the primaries. Back then almost everyone took matching funds, limiting raw expenditures. Connolly decided NOT to take the matching funds, which is why his $ number for the era is so high.
