A group of 24 Senate Democrats urged the president Monday to dodge Congress and act on his own to make new rules on gun control, after Congress has failed to move any gun bills.
The senators, led by Sens. Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy of Connecticut, requested the White House take an immediate step to change the law that now allows sellers who do not have a federal license to sell guns to individuals at shows, online and elsewhere without conducting background checks.
The letter said Democrats would keep trying to pass a gun bill, but said Obama should explore options on his own in the meantime.
"We ask you, concurrently, to investigate and pursue all available options under your executive authority to reduce gun violence," they wrote. "Specifically, your administration could take an immediate step that would have an important impact on limiting gun violence. We urge you to address an aspect of the high-volume gun seller loophole that allows guns to be sold without a background check by eliminating the ambiguity surrounding the term 'engaged in the business' as it pertains to federally licensed firearms dealers."
"It would help ensure that those clearly holding themselves out as gun dealers are held to the same standard as the thousands of responsible gun dealers already licensed with [Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives] ATF across the country," the senators wrote.
The regulatory definition of "engaged in the business" would be tweaked to include all gun sellers, not just ATF-licensed individuals. Current law requires only licensed gun dealers to carry out background checks during gun sales.
In the House, Gun Violence Prevention Task Force Chair Rep. Mike Thompson (D-Calif.) sent a similar letter to the White House, with support from 114 of his colleagues.
>> Senate Dems demand executive action on guns
Very well. Permission granted to execute them with guns, then.
Democrats, working hard every day to kill you American.
“act on his own to make new rules on gun control”
Don’t they mean “laws?”
And isn’t that illegal?
I agree! They need to be held accountable!
WHO are these “24” senators???????
Better. Not. Do. It.
Quit playing on their terms for us.
Don’t just hold the line.
Fight for far more than you can hope for.
Demand the inconceivable.
Blow their minds.
Make _them_ scramble to hold the line.
Repeal 922(o). Make post-1986 machine-guns legal.
Repeal NFA. End the pointless paperwork & taxes on guns.
Make silencers completely legal. Stop calling them “firearms”. Heck, call for making them nigh unto mandatory.
Make CCW explicitly subject to “full faith & credit” clause. Oh, anyone is legal to carry anything open or concealed in some states? well, guess that makes it legal for anyone to carry anything open or concealed in all states.
Give purchase of first “military style” weapons tax-deductible. Heck, show financial hardship and get a 100% tax credit. 1000 rounds of military ammo, any kind, likewise annually.
Can’t get 922(o) repealed? then get governors, or anyone so empowered, to authorize exemptions for all upstanding citizens.
He11, we got the Obama to sign a law permitting weapons carry in national parks. Why stop there?
That’s exactly what he is trying to do “start a civil war”
He is trying to turn us all against one another- blacks against whites, gun owners against liberals etc.
The old saying- A house divided against itself cannot stand.
he is doing everything he can to destrop America. We all get caught up in the details and forget to look at the big picture.
Thanks markomalley.
Maybe there could just be a law which makes breaking the law illegal. No exceptions, no more posturing. If only we had such a law, then we’d be assured something would be done.
“Dhimmicrats Demand That 0bama Act On Guns!”
“Brownshirts Demand That Hitler Act On [fill in the blank]!”
Hey I’ve done my part. I’ve voted for pro-2nd politicians and have tried convincing those around me of the correctness of my beliefs.
Since that doesn’t seem to have worked I will simply put my firearms (assuming for a moment I had any) where the government cannot reach them and wait until a majority regains their senses. If they do not regain them in my lifetime I will pass my firearms (assuming I had any) to my progeny.
“Make CCW explicitly subject to âfull faith & creditâ clause. Oh, anyone is legal to carry anything open or concealed in some states? well, guess that makes it legal for anyone to carry anything open or concealed in all states.”
I am as anti-big federal government as they come, but I’d like to see a uniform application of the Second Amendment across the country and take everything pertaining to guns away from the states.
I totally agree. He will do it. Then, we’re dealing with years of litigation to undo it.
This is serious.
As I’ve said before, continued ‘action on guns’ will further the advancement and viability of 3-D manufactured ‘plastic’ firearms. What are the authorities going to do with that readily available technology?? Add a small milling machine, the appropriate software, and one is ready to go with nearly any caliber home-created firearm now......
