First of all, I'm not actually sure that Trump-- in the comment you reference-- was not referring to immigration in general, seeing as how in other statements he declared it unfair for illegal aliens to get automatic legalization when other people have been waiting in line for years.
But as for how it's common sense? For the same reason why you don't bring Syrian Refugees into this country and then hope to vet them while they're already here.
