Contrary to Obama claim, US has history of admitting refugees based on faith

Immigration experts give President Obama Pinocchios for his claim that the U.S. has never used “religious tests” to determine which refugees get passage to America.

Russian and Ethiopian Jews, Armenians Christians and Catholics from Vietnam have all been moved to the front of the line in previous eras based on their faith, according to historians. And giving one religious group preference is tantamount to sending others to the back of the lines, noted immigration experts.

“Clearly, there have been policies that said we will consider certain people from certain religions,” said Ira Mehlman, spokesman for Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR).

Anyone who has access to ancestral immigration paperwork should take a look at it.

My great grandfather had to swear to God that he wasn't an anarchist, a Polygamist or a believer in the practice of polygamy.

There was a huge fear of European radicals immigrating in the early 1900s and U.S. Immigration policy specifically worked to keep them out.

Congress decided that immigrants should be required to pass a medical exam and have no criminal record in order to immigrate to the United States. The 1891 Immigration Act barred people having any contagious diseases or history of crime. In 1903, people in the United States were also fearful of European radicals entering the country and so the government added anarchists and subversives to the 1891 Act.

Fear was so widespread that Congress and President Theodore Roosevelt decided to establish the Dillingham Commission to report the effects of immigration on the country. The results concluded that the United States was not benefiting from immigration because the immigrants were inferior to United States citizens. The Commission recommended that the United States no longer accept immigrants from Eastern and Southern Europe and furthermore all immigrants were to pass a literacy test. In 1917, under the Wilson administration, Congress passed the first comprehensive immigration act which included a literacy test requirement. In 1924 the National Origins Act was passed putting a quota system on the number of immigrants who entered the United States. The law effectively stopped anymore large flows of European immigration.

Whatever happened to plain old common sense?

My great grandfather arrived in 1912 and the letter of intent was filed in 1917. It was also at that time that the USA saw its largest influx of middle eastern Christians who didn't believe in polygamy so it was a good question to ask.

Thanks. Also note the essential pledge to become a U.S. citizen in addition to renouncing allegiance and fidelity to your former home. We were very clear about leaving your hyphen on the boat and becoming AMERICANS. My Dad’s family arrived from Germany in 1927 not speaking English, assimilated, and did very well here. I don’t consider myself German-American at all...well, I’d be happy to make a small exception in October.

That’s makes sense, depending on where the refuge is coming from, they may be persecuted for their beliefs.

Islam is not a religion and should not be allowed in the US. Islam should be banned in the US and mosques closed. Islam’s teachings is not compatible
With western civilization or our Constitution.
