Benedict Arnold WAS a hero many times over in the heat of face to face battle before he let his vanity and libido get in the way of his commitment to duty. Like I said, he WAS a hero before he became a traitor.
McCain is essentially the same to me, but he was not exceptional in any way but being born into his lot in life and coddled all the way through it. The big difference is that he does his treachery in the name of this country and on our dime.
