An 11-month-old boy was attacked and killed by the family's pet pit bull last night, according to Oneida County Sheriff Robert M. Maciol. The incident occurred about 7:15 p.,m. at a home at 2700 State Route 12B in the town of Marshall in Oneida County.
The 2-year-old pit bull named Diesel was in the family's living room playing with Lisa M. Cittadino's three daughters ages 7, 10 and 12, police said. Cittadino, 32, tolid police she turned her back momentarily and then heard screams from her son and daughters.
Cittadino said she saw the dog attacking her son, and began to frantically try to get the dog to release his grip on her child, police said. Once the dog let go, she called 911 and began giving her son first aid, police said.
Police said the child was near the dog's food dish at the time of the attack, and that may have precipitated the attack.
The child was taken to St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Utica, police said, where he died as a result of injuries to his neck and face, deputies said.
The dog was taken by the Verona animal officer, and will be euthanized at the owner's request.
Deputies said Cittadino said the dog has never been aggressive in the past.
The family has been offered counseling.
The Onondaga County Medical Examiner's officer will conduct an autopsy.
I personally saw one that was in the family for 7 years, raised from a pup, then one day it just turned. No warning. Thank heavens, everyone made it to safety, either on the garage room or to the house. The goat faced it’s wrath though and didn’t make it.
How about pre-grief counselors to talk sense into such families that want killer pets?
How about local animal shelters and pounds stopping with adopting out killer pets?
Just a couple of possibilities before the killer horse is out of the dimwit barn.
My vet said that because children are down at eye level with the dog that they are seen as the enemy. Pitt Bulls are especially dangerous especially around children!
I would never have a big dog especially a pit around children.
Winner of all comments of the thread! Hands down!
Poor kid.
Let 1 show up on my yard off the leash, and yep, same thing. I don’t give a crap. 1 dead dog.
“I would never have a big dog especially a pit around children.”
It’s not the size of the dog. I had a hybrid wolf bitch, almost all wolf, and she was the most intelligent ‘dog’ I’ve ever had. She was an incredible amount of work to train, and required constant supervision, attention, exercise, and stimulus during her younger years. That said, she was just a huge loving baby around (most) people, and in particular, children. She KNEW they were the young of our type (humans) and took to looking out for them. As much as I appreciated her extraordinary intelligence and abilities, I wouldn’t advise people to take on hybrids, and don’t think I’d do it again. Instead, if I wanted another well trained dog for protection, it’s easier to work with traditional breeds such as shepherds and malinois. Point being, it’s not the size of the dog.
The reason I said big dog is because they can do more damage than a small dog. I know all dogs are not vicious, I have had small dogs that were mean and not trustworthy and big dogs who were sweethearts.
That makes sense.
I never thought about it that way ... but you are right.
