Priests give Homilies, which are sermons based on the readings of the day. If today’s Scripture readings are apocalyptic, which they are, he does need to address the topic of being ready for the Lord’s return.
what would everyone have said if he completely ignored the readings and sermonized on something else? That would have been a worse idea.
Maybe he knows there is a global dictator that will run the new global government in just a couple of years. When that happens that will be the end and the start of a new beginning.
