An audience gathered around to gleefully watch two other people beat themselves bloody and unconscious is not demonstrative of a decent society.

You don't understand the "Sweet Science" or any contact sport. Combat is bred into our DNA just as much as it is in nature. Contact sports just channel these biological needs into a more controlled, safe venue.

I question the "safe" part. I've read where it may be the case that Muhammad Ali's Parkinson's disease may have been brought on by the boxing. I don't know.

As for combat in our DNA, that is probably true. But are we not called upon to rise above our darker nature? I hate cliches, but here's one: What Would Jesus Do? I don't think he'd be in the audience at an MMA event cheering the first busted nose or detached retina.
