The protesters wanted the target range gone. I think developers had their eyes on that island. With the range gone, there was no longer a reason to keep the Roosevelt Roads Naval station open, so it was shut down as well with Southern Command moved to Jacksonville. The corrupt local politicians wanted to convert it into an International Airport and tourist destination. They couldn’t deliver.
