Freedom of speech. Racial inequality. Student activism. Safe spaces.
These are the phrases that have been lobbied about over the past week, in tones both fervent and contemptuous, as University of Missouri students successfully campaigned for the resignation of their system president.
Mizzou is, of course, just the most prominent example. As The Washington Post’s Michael Miller pointed out Tuesday, similar debates are being had and protests held across the country, for instance at Yale University and Ithaca College.
At the center of all these debates is another word: whiteness.
At some universities, there are classes dedicated to understanding the notions of whiteness, white supremacy and what the field’s proponents see as the quiet racism of white people. The professor of one such “whiteness studies†course, Lee Bebout of Arizona State University, announced recently that he would be teaching for the second time a course originally called U.S. Race Theory & the Problem of Whiteness.
The syllabus described Critical Whiteness Studies as a field “concerned with dismantling white supremacy in part by understanding how whiteness is socially constructed and experienced.†Readings included works by Toni Morrison, Eduardo Bonilla-Silva (“Racism without Racistsâ€) and Jane H. Hill (“The Everyday Language of White Racismâ€).
For the coming semester, Bebout will add Ta-Nehisi Coates’s recent book “Between the World and Me.â€

ASU is conservative compared to many universities. There are always some loons around though, happy to trash Western civilization.
Any American who does not think this is a problem, that those who are concerned about it are overreacting, and that the whole movement should just be ignored are idiots in the extreme.
Modern universities are stupid pits.
Call the Mizzou campus police and report it.
I love it. We might as well say things like that. Why not? We’ve been groveling and apologizing for ages, and they just hate us. It’s time to be as racist as they’re always accusing us of being.
It must be nice to have an entire race or people to blame whenever you come across a problem.
You never have to face issues, just blame another person and you don’t have to deal with the real reason why you didn’t get that job when you have a record and tattoos all over your face.
You don’t have to deal with rejection when you ask a girl out. It’s because of race not your repulsive attitude or presence.
You can always say you do not have to spend money on classes you actually took in college and failed or worse yet, graduated with a Women’s Study degree and nobody wants to hire you straight out of college.
Being white, I have not had the luxury of being able to blame my problems on someone else. I had to deal with them and feel the pain of my own failures. Yes, it was character building but, at the time, I was not in favor of it at all.
When I was a child, I had to grow up and face the fact that I was not innocent of everything. I had to grow up and own may failures and change.
But then again, that’s just me.

You are absolutely right. This isn’t funny, and it isn’t just a silly annoyance, as some seem to think.
