Why Do Parents Hate Paying College Tuition? Meet Missouri Professor Melissa Click

Thanks to a student’s YouTube video, University of Missouri Assistant Professor Melissa Click has become of symbol of what many parents dread when they send their children off to college. From her bullying of students to her doctoral thesis on the whiteness of Martha Stewart and her classes in “visual literacy,” she crystalizes the view that tuition dollars are spent on nonsense, and sometimes worse. As Missouri high school students prepare their applications this fall, they are looking at paying over $25,000 for a year on campus and non-residents will have to pay over $40,000.

When the president of MU and the chancellor of the main campus in Columbia stepped down Monday following protests that they were insensitive to racial issues, Click and other members of the faculty went to work enforcing their self-created ban on the media. Click was captured on video harassing student journalists and calling in “muscle” to prevent one from documenting the tent city that had gone up on the campus quad, a public area that was known as a “safe space.”

That an assistant professor of “mass media” in the department of communication was unaware of the instantaneous power of YouTube and social media is another reason for parents to wonder about the wisdom of spending their money on Click. She teaches in the College of Arts and Sciences rather than the vaunted School of Journalism, but that didn’t keep fans of the First Amendment from weighing in. The National Press Club called on the university to advise students and staff that they shouldn’t keep reporters from reporting “and certainly not through physical force or threats.”

Yep.... I write for a local magazine. I had to do an article about a college professor here in Oklahoma. She has a doctorate in 19th century british literature. A doctorate in that? She teaches literature, and classes like World Development where they study the writing of man from the Sumarians to current. Finish with studies of video games as literature. I mean... good grief. It's a good thing to know about history and literature of the past. It's good to have read historical things and be informed and educated. But a doctorate? And majoring in that? Rather in majoring in something of substance that earns income outside of being a professor? Or majoring in something that adds value to our country?

I obviously couldn't tell her what I really thought about her degree and the state of college. And yeah... she was EXTREMELY liberal. We did talk politics a little, but not specifically about her. I had to hold my nose and write the stupid article..... I know. I'm a sell out :)

Many students these days would be much better off going to a trade school and learning how to actually do something useful instead of paying thousands to hear someone bloviating about bull$hit like this Melissa Clit.

The Cathedral model had its place historically. The ‘cloud’ makes the Bazaar far more available. And the Bazaar will win in the long term. Without government funding of the Cathedral model via student loans the Bazaar would already be the paradigm.

I will add, the government’s support of the Cathedral via student loans is a recognition that they can control the Cathedral and what it teaches. Not so easy to control the Bazaar.

LOL, ya....so back when we were being busing across town so the school system was racially ‘equal’. The Massholes in Southie were rioting because they didnt want blacks in their schools. Glad to see how those high minded dont think it applies to them.

That said not all of NE is like MA and CT. Northern NE is a very different place or at least was until the infestation by the ‘high minded’. It used to be a really good place to live but now its becoming less so. The Glicks of the world just wont be happy until they make everyone else as miserable as they are.

You’ve always been able to get a doctorate in English literature. Too bad she learned nothing from reading 19th century British literature because it is, generally, full of moral high mindedness.

She was still a rep of the school when she asked to have some one assaulted I do not expect that her “resignation” will affect the lawsuit or possible criminal charges of incitement to violence or riot.
