OOPS: Donald Trump -- not exactly an expert on TPP
The Washington Examiner ^ | November 11, 2015 | staff

Posted on 11/11/2015 12:26:56 AM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

During last night's Republican presidential debate, the Wall Street Journal's Gerard Baker made a critical mistake: He tried to pin Donald Trump down on policy specifics. In this case, it was about trade policy, a subject about which Trump evidently knows very little.

Baker asked the billionaire "which particular parts" of the pending Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade deal he objected to. If he were familiar with the deal, Trump could have raised any of several issues. Instead, he continued with the same word salad about China that he has been issuing forth since long before the TPP had been negotiated and published.

"If you look at how China and India and almost everyone takes advantage of the Untied States - China in particular, because they are so good, it's the number one abuser of this country. If you look at the way they take advantage, it's through currency manipulation. It's not even discussed in the almost 6,000 page agreemen...If [TPP] is approved, it will just be more bad trade deals, more loss of jobs for our country. We are losing jobs like no one's ever lost jobs before. I want to bring jobs back into this country."

It took a clear-headed Rand Paul to bring some reality back into the conversation.

"Hey, Gerard?" Paul interjected. "We might want to point out that China's not part of this deal." The crowed roared with laughter as Trump shrunk before their eyes. (Never mind the fact that Trump had just accused India of currency manipulation - perhaps making him the first person to do so at least in the last decade.)...

I assume that in the little Podunk in which you live, you wouldn’t have a clue as to Trump’s business success. As a NYer, I can tell you not only is he a spectacular business man (do you know what the west side highway looks like these days??) he has been a cheerleading voice for being tough on crime for over 40 years. I still admire his outrage over the Central Park jogging case and his generosity to the victim.

And he did not conflate China with the new trade deal. You need to listen more closely.

Your freedoms end at the border. Get over it.

Protectionism is the first conservative value. All the founders were protectionist, do some research.

Trump said correctly the deal doesn’t address currency manipulation which China is guilty of and harms America.

Just yesterday I read China is dumping dollars Shorting the value of USD. China also has for a long while been undermining the USD as a world exchange currency.
China announced this week it wants the French Frank to be the world exchange currency. The French are in worse financial health than America and China wants to use their shaky currency instead of the dollar?

Trump was right the trade deal is bad for America.

Trump had said that TPP was written so that China could take advantage by coming in the “back door.” I am not sure what he meant but I interpret the statement as since China was not part of the deal, but can easily get into it. I don’t know, but the “back door” suggests so.

Yeah.....well it’s been out of style since the Whig party.

It’s also been attempted and proved to be disastrous.

In case you did not get a education on that topic, protectionist policies began the 1929 crash and subsequent depression.

We can no longer isolate ourselves.

Not for a long time..

We already have a trade pact with China. It was fast tracked during the Bush admin, and China currently enjoys most favored nation status.

Not that I like it, because they are protectionist in their policies, but it is what it is..

Bull. Your are historically ignorant. Tariffs was the primary funding vehicle up until 1913. That is when the income tax took over, the income tax that Free Traitors™ love so much.

Devine providence gave America almost an entire continent and resources enough to be self sufficient. GloBULList are full of it. The USA was self sufficient up to the 1970's.

You are beating a very dead horse.

Sure,I am fully aware of the segment of the republican party that was protectionist and isolationist. They lost that battle when they failed to keep the US from entering WWII.

What they are now, is libertarians. But the nations policy agenda has not been controlled by that lobby since the Whigs. They have had their day in the sun, The world went on without them.

“Trump never gets specific about much of anything”

Can you cite a candidate who has gotten specific on anything.

Trump is specific on immigration. Immigration, of course, is the only issue that decides the fate of the nation. All the other issues are incidental.

That’s more related to Oil, but you are correct in that we used to be a lot of things, but we are no longer and there is no way to turn time back.

You are a citizen of the world. I am not. I am an American first last and always. You can't be a gloBULList and a Patriot at the same time.

Snake oil salesmen have nothing on the Free Traitor™.

Ted Cruz...

What would you expect me to say.

But frankly, every candidate save for those who are no longer at the podiums, have in debates and public forums been more specific than Trump with the possible exception of Bush. I think they are about equal..

Oil is not manufacturing. They are different.. There are three legs on the wealth creation stool - mining, manufacturing and agriculture. Unfortunately mining has to be done where the ore is located.

By the way, that citizen of the world crap is liberal dogma.

I don’t think of myself that way...never used the terminology.

Trade always has to have a element of fairness. it cannot therefore be totally free.

I think that term is well past it’s expiration date.

It’s political gamesmanship.

Ted Cruz?

He came out last night against amnesty, his first specific. He went into theory last night, which I agreed with, but it wasn’t “specific”. Very unclear about allowing banks to fail, yes and no. However, the answer to that question can not be explained in 90 seconds. He should have left it alone.

Trump's 'one size fits all' talking points are beginning to be predictable, stale and off topic. expect him to get frustrated, bored and find or fabricate a reason to drop out.........he just doesn't have the depth....
