During last night's Republican presidential debate, the Wall Street Journal's Gerard Baker made a critical mistake: He tried to pin Donald Trump down on policy specifics. In this case, it was about trade policy, a subject about which Trump evidently knows very little.
Baker asked the billionaire "which particular parts" of the pending Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade deal he objected to. If he were familiar with the deal, Trump could have raised any of several issues. Instead, he continued with the same word salad about China that he has been issuing forth since long before the TPP had been negotiated and published.
"If you look at how China and India and almost everyone takes advantage of the Untied States - China in particular, because they are so good, it's the number one abuser of this country. If you look at the way they take advantage, it's through currency manipulation. It's not even discussed in the almost 6,000 page agreemen...If [TPP] is approved, it will just be more bad trade deals, more loss of jobs for our country. We are losing jobs like no one's ever lost jobs before. I want to bring jobs back into this country."
It took a clear-headed Rand Paul to bring some reality back into the conversation.
"Hey, Gerard?" Paul interjected. "We might want to point out that China's not part of this deal." The crowed roared with laughter as Trump shrunk before their eyes. (Never mind the fact that Trump had just accused India of currency manipulation - perhaps making him the first person to do so at least in the last decade.)...

You know, you’re right... maybe we do need a micromanager like Carter to make America great...
If personal wealth measured in billions of dollars was the reason - the main qualification that someone should be elected as POTUS, then we should consider Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Larry Ellison, Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, Michael Bloomburg, Sheldon Adelson, and George Soros - all much wealthier than Trump.
Be realistic! No one read the bill, if you don’t know what’s in it, you can’t fix it.
Why do snakes bite?
If China is willing to live up to the terms of the treaty why would their joining it be bad for the US?
Wouldn't surprise me to see the establishment reach out to the future felon should they fail to get a Rino and Cankels gets Berned.
I really don't think Trump would back the demonratic nominee.
But like sports...fantasy politics can be fun to play....I guess.
Pssst...(somebody get a net....a big net....quietly....
:-)
Because you don’t know what you’re talking about, m’dear. In fact, he is a dynamic and successful business man who has made a strong impact on NYC. Not living anywhere near this city, you have no idea of what you are talking about. And for you, of all people, to call somebody else arrogant and juvenile. Phew!
Here. (I need coffee before I can post for myself)

But if Trump doesn't know WHY the deal is so bad, doesn't that make a difference? How can you articulate a persuasive argument to build support against the bill if you don't even know what is in the bill and explain why it should be opposed?
Cincinatus called. He wants you back in the kitchen.
You and I watched different debates. The question Trump was asked was specifically about TPP - Trump was the one who started talking about China, India and currency manipulation, and from all indications, he was talking about those topics in response to the question about TPP. So either Trump was avoiding the question because he didn't know any specifics about TPP, or he was mistaken about what TPP entailed. Either way, it is a bad mistake for someone that is supposed to be an expert on trade and business issues.
I heard clear enough. Trump expanded on more than TPP about the whole trade and finance for pacific rim. All candidates expand on their answers in these debates. RaPaul wasn’t listening very well or he wanted to take some BS gratuitous shot at Trump. Probably both.
You were correct about the debate last night about this stating Trump didn’t say China was part of TPP. No, he didn’t did he. The only way DUmb RaPual gets to be correct here is for Trump to have said just that.
Unfortunately, when enough excrement is thrown on the wall, some sticks. The fortunate thing is that Trump’s campaign powers over top of the MSM. This is a movement because Washington is broken—and only an outsider, with the American People, can fix it.
Your link made my point. If China wants to join the TPP and live up to the environmental regs., etc., I don't see how that hurts the US.
Are we worried that China will join the TPP or not?
Right, Trump does have the firepower to keep the naysayers and dingbats at bay in the media and everywhere else. He’s the prescription for it.
Another thing about TPP and China. Trump prefaced his discussion and answer with “gives China a backdoor to TPP” I wonder what that means to the naysayers? Does that mean China is going through the front door to TPP? LoL. He knows they are not a signature to the agreement ...as of yet.
Trump has been speaking about China’s “backdoor to TPP” at least since April 22.
The ignoramus[es] who wrote the article this thread is based on appear[s] to have blissfully missed or ignored that essential point about the certainty of China's backdoor access (and the backdoor access of other countries) to this trade agreement (as stressed over and over by Trump), and their obvious connections to this ill-advised, harmful trade agreement. The anti-Trump bias of the "journalists" who wrote this article, blinds them to the simple truth.
Trump should have known and said that. I'm a Trump fan. I went to see him here in OKC. But yeah, that was not a good moment for him. He got it handed to him. And... I'm guessing he's already had a discussion, if not fired someone, for not prepping him for that answer.
Dude, I am not being paid to read 5400 pages of trade text.
The point is, the people who are responsible to read it, have not read it.
Me reading it or not reading it has no bearing on their responsibility to do so.
