Here’s why people are mad about Starbucks’ red cups
Fortune Yahoo Finance ^ | 11/09/15 | Claire Zillman

Starbucks started its holiday cup tradition in 1997--so “this year's design is another way Starbucks is inviting customers to create their own stories with a red cup that mimics a blank canvas.” It’s also worth noting previous Starbucks red cups lacked any outright Christian symbolism.

Jeffrey Fields, Starbucks vice president of design and content, said in the release that in the past the holiday cups have told stories. This year, Starbucks “wanted to usher in the holidays with a purity of design that welcomes all of our stories," Fields wrote. He said that the coffee chain “has become a place of sanctuary during the holidays,” so it’s “embracing the simplicity and the quietness of it.”

I remember these dispensed from out vending machine way back in the 1980's when I was working in textiles. We would all get a cup of joe and bet a buck on who had the winning hand. I would not be surprised if these are outlawed now.

You never looked at the "poker" cups out of a vending machine? Me neither, unless somebody pointed it out.

I think I've only been to a Starbucks once, at least FWIR, and that was because it was on the way to a bus station.

Dunkin Donuts is attempting to capitalize on the backlash with a "festive wreath" on their cups.

Better coffee, imho, not to mention more reasonably priced.

Oh for pity’s sake. Seriously?

Does every group have to be “offended” now?

Christians are beheaded in the Middle East and this character is on a jag about damned coffee cups? How about bringing some attention to what Christians are REALLY suffering?

Howard Schultz (CEO) isn’t a Christian so I don’t see why people are surprised by this.

Where Christ is forbidden? It is funny you say that as Starbucks sells plenty of product with “Christmas” on it. But some self proclaimed evangelist makes a video and people go nuts. Do you really think the kid behind the counter, earning minimum wage making coffee has a problem saying “Merry Christmas”?

Funny thing, McDonalds, Dunkin Donuts, Caribou, and 7/11 coffee cups don’t say “Merry Christmas” either. They must all be owned by communist, atheist, heathens. Do not give any of them money!!

This article certainly made me laugh today.
