What Carson describes happened in Chicago also. Upon the start of the riots in Chicago’s westside, I was assigned by insurance companies to check the status of the buildings they were insuring in the riot area.
Here I was a young white guy just out of ‘Nam with a short haircut, but obviously not police, asking questions and taking notes. Although I never came close to personal danger, leaders of the riot, who knew me from anti-Dem machine politics passed the word around to not bother me...and not just me but some other whites (teachers, social workers, Alinsky activists, etc.). I heard several 2d hand stories from both Blacks and whites of individuals watching out for each other.
So Carson’s story from Detroit is plausible.
