That’s really not the issue. Calling it a scholarship is not a problem. Saying you were offered one without actually applying is the issue. Especially with no paperwork or anyone else to corroborate. The changing, evolving statements don’t help either.

It happens in college academics and athletics pretty regularly that coaches will tell kids that they’re interested in them. In our family just this last year, a graduating member had 3 full informal offers on the table.
