They hate him viscerally because he’s Christian. I do not believe their thinking is as nuanced as you credit.
They really hate Cruz because he’s Chrisitan and conservative. That’s why he’s my candidate.

my point is let’s not all jump on the Carson for President bandwagon because of this,, Carson will never be elected President,, this smells to high heaven like a put up job by the left to get Conservatives to rally behind Carson and vote for him because that will show those bad media people.. CNN and Politico lame hit pieces all within a few hours?..
let’s keep our eyes on the prize.. we have to nominate somebody who can sweep Conservatives and the blue collar Reagan Democrats types in a general election.. Carson cannot do that.. if nominated he would be defeated in epic proportion
I guess I’m not sure that an SDA is actually a Christian. I’m just not sure. However, I believe that Cruz is. They hate all Republicans - it doesn’t matter whether they are people of faith or not. They have an R after their name - that’s all the matters.
