They confirmed that Westmoreland did attend a banquet in Detroit honoring the medal winners a couple of months later.

Carson did not explicitly say the banquet was on the same day as the parade. He said “afterward.”

I believe he attended the banquet, met Westmoreland, and was offered a nomination by either Westmoreland or other military officials who attended. Carson was the top JROTC cadet in Detroit with excellent grades. Such an offer is totally believable and highly likely.

The Facebook post saying he was offered a slot is the problem for me. There can be no confusion on terminology there.

I believe what he was offered was the opportunity to apply and perhaps have Westmoreland's help but that's not the same as a “slot”.
