Actually, in ROTC there is a “direct path” option. I know because I worked in IT at Army HR at Ft Knox, specifically supporting ROTC.

If a Cadet knows the right guy, he can follow a sort of direct process.

What Carson said can be true if one is not trying to parse words.

This issue is about semantics and stupid.

For the record, I’d like to see Carson drop out, but this is a witch hunt.

What is with these people ... (Brian Williams, etc) ... this isn’t the 1800’s ... we can look things up ourselves in literally seconds. Why do these people do this? If its mental, then he has no business being POTUS.

-— Sounds like he was encouraged to apply but didn’t -—

I think he said that he met Westmoreland (confirmed) who told him to apply, or made an offer (unconfirmed), however you want to phrase it.

I remember receiving a letter from West Point when I was graduating which I interpreted as an offer of a full scholarship, which isn’t exactly true, since everyone who goes doesn’t have to pay.

Dr. Carson said he was thrilled to get an offer to go to West Point. He did not say he got an appointment. My daughter got an offer to go to West Point before she received her appointment.

If General Westmoreland says to a teenaged JROTC super-star words to the effect of if you want to go to West Point I can make it happen, it is no stretch to call that an offer to go to West Point. An offer that was turned down so he could go to Yale.

I really don’t like Carson one bit, but he could have been promised a slot at one of the service academies. While most traditional appointments are via the student’s US House representative, or senator, there are discretionary appointments, as well. A General with Westmorland’s stature can make things happen.

I knew a CMOH winner that said he wanted to go, he got a slot. Sons of military members KIA were offered slots on occasion. The class was about 1,000 cadets very year, more slots than just those available through congress.

That Gen. Westmorland’s staff indicated to Carson that he could go if he wanted does not seem a lie to me. If he had accepted, of course the proper paperwork would be the next step. He already had his “interview” and passed easily.

I would diagnose Dr. Carson as Sociopath with mild dilutional tendency. He is not yet a fully developed Psychotic. There is hope if he gets immediate treatment.
The only issue is was he admitted to West Point — or not. If not we have to say Good Bye.

If the most powerful General in the war says you can get an appointment with his grades, it was a valid offer. He never lied no matter how much you want it to be.

It is not like lying directly to a family about their dead son.

As a grad, his whole story about it is such obvious BS that I’m surprised no one on FB called him on it.

“The next question is from Bill. He wanted to know if it was true that I was offered a slot at West Point after high school.

Bill, that is true. I was the highest student ROTC member in Detroit and was thrilled to get an offer from West Point.”

What part of what Carson himself says here (just a short while ago to boot, in August 2015) don’t you understand?

Yes you are correct. Check the attached links for both USMA and USAFA processes. There is a category for ROTC honor students, which is probably what Carson would have been competitive for, but it is patently obvious to me that Carson has been pushing a fabricated tale for years. The Carson supporters are in overdrive trying to spin this as a positive, but Carson’s words are there for all to see.

Westmoreland did not offer Carson a scholarship to West Point because they don’t exist. To get into West Point a Congressman has to submit your name as the start of the process. Once the process is complete, one is either appointed or not appointed, but there is no such thing as a scholarship.

Carson at best embellished. I believe he knowingly lied. As a service academy graduate, they do not fling “scholarships” around.

My family had dinner with an Army general one evening. He pretty much guaranteed that if my boy wanted to go to North Georgia and join the Corps of Cadets he could make it happen.

So, yes, I could see a bright, poor black kid from Detroit getting a "guarantee" if he applied.

Educate yourself on the process. They don’t fling appointments around like frisbees, even from generals. Carson has been fabricating this for years and he got called on it.

“By my name and tagline you can tell who I support. I am now a fan of the good Dr. I don’t like political assassinations.”

what part of Carson’s Facebook statement don’t you understand? He lied.

To the point, there is no such thing as a scholarship to West Point. Westmoreland did not make any such offer. I doubt Westmoreland ever said a word to Carson, and the fact that Carson says he offered something that doesn’t exist, supports the contention that they never had a conversation.

Darlin’, I’m on your side. I’ve said the same things today.

This FB post bothers me. If his staffers wrote it, then my position remains unchanged. I simply don’t know at this point.

Please be objective. We’ve both argued that Carson (as a teenager) considered the offer of help and a highly likely appointment as a full scholarship offer. We cannot argue that any such confusion could exist regarding being offered a slot by West Point.

We need to know who wrote the FB post. It’s key.
