Defeat of Houston LGBT-rights measure may have broad impact

HOUSTON (AP) — The landslide defeat of a nondiscrimination ordinance in Houston has stunned LGBT-rights activists across the nation. They're now bracing for their opponents in other states to seize on the successful tactic of stoking fears over transgender people's access to public restrooms.

By a 61-to-39-percent margin, voters in America's fourth largest city on Tuesday rejected a broad equal-rights ordinance — extending protections in employment, housing and public spaces on the basis of race, sexual orientation, gender identity and other categories. Opponents prevailed with a campaign that dubbed the measure "the bathroom ordinance" and raised the specter of male sexual predators invading women's restrooms.

The outcome was "a devastating blow to equality," said the Human Rights Campaign, a national group advocating for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people.

"It's almost unbelievable that this could happen in a city like Houston," said the campaign's president, Chad Griffin. "But make no mistake: If we don't double down today, we'll face the same thing again and again in cities across the nation."

The ordinance lost despite strong support from many major businesses, and despite its supporters' arguments that serious problems with bathroom access have been virtually nonexistent in the 17 states and scores of cities that have banned discrimination against transgender people in public accommodations.

"This is a national game-changer," said Jonathan Saenz of Texas Values Action, which opposed the ordinance. He described the result as "a massive victory for common sense, safety, and religious freedom."

Bunch of crybabies when they don't get their way. Now they are threatening to pressure the NFL to pull the Superbowl from Houston in 2017. We can't allow that to happen!!!

Love how they define the issue here. And when did you stop beating up your aged mother?

I would say go for it...double down and put as much funding as possible into it, and let people know that NFL football is all about LGBT rights. This way....people can make a decision about the NFL, and just turn it off on Sundays. Funny how one million TVs turned off would send a message very quickly to NFL management.

Its because we know what the freaks do behind closed doors in addition to all the pedophiles that are busted all the time because they “created an opportunity” to molest young children by getting employed where they could get access to them whether it be as a teacher, clergy, scout leader, or daycare worker. We know what they would do if they got access to a young child alone in a restroom as a homo pervert. The history speaks for itself.

Now if that's not objective reporting, tell me what is!

They’ll do what they always do...file a federal lawsuit and find a friendly judge who will overturn the popular vote and then legislate from the bench.

Most of the comments on Yahoo were not against the outcome the voters in Houston chose.

We’re digging a line in the sand.

The Left wants to erase human nature. We seek to preserve it.

And voters understand exactly what its really all about.

No wonder the Left doesn’t want a vote on “open bathrooms.”

You nailed it. And then we’ll hear endless whining about the importance of respect for “law.”

This shows how phony the claims of the public being pro-homo have been. Almost every time there is a REAL polling of the public in pretty much every location across the land, the homos lose. They then wait a few weeks and claim public opinion has shifted, sue, and win because they have installed their activist judges absolutely everywhere. It has all been a great big con. Just watch. They will flip this around, too. Until the rest of the public gets sick of being robbed of their rights, these people will keep robbing them.

The question is: How many transgenders are sneaking into the opposite sexes’ bathrooms on a day-to-day basis?

Social issues are political winners.

They’re a gold mine for conservatives.

We’ve been ceding the culture wars to the Left.

Its time to fight back.

Are you freakin’ kidding me? This is Houston, “Deep Red” Texas; located in Southeast Texas where with the good ol’ boys it’s God, Guns & Girls, not Guys, Groping & Gays.

YOu are correct. I would add...

"Conservatism" without the social/moral component isn't conservatism at all.

“a devastating blow to equality,”

“equality” now being tacked onto everything as the magic word to get every leftist cause shoved through the ballot box.

“Marriage equality”
“transit equality”
“internet equality”
“income equality”

You can do a google search and finds hundreds of articles using that combo.

“LGBT-rights measure may have broad impact”

More like a dyke impact, or a queer impact, but not a broad impact.
