Happy Halloween! It's that time of year when your neighbors are secretly unwrapping candy, brushing lollipops with poison, and inserting razor blades into Snickers bars!
Actually, while it may be a holiday tradition view your neighbors as psychopaths who patiently wait for the one day of the year to kill the local kids, in fact no child has ever been killed by a stranger's poisoned candy. Ever. But facts don't stop fear. Here are three ways in which our misguided terror on Halloween is killing all the fun.
Don't Go Outside
Parents are so scared of letting their kids roam free, thatâno jokeâthere's a trend called "Trunk or Treat." Cars gather in a circle and kids go from one trunk to the next to grab candy, as if walking in a circle in a parking lot and collecting sugar is the whole point of the holiday. Sugar is important, but so is going outside on your own with your friends.
Some towns are so scared of the holiday that they've placed curfews on trick or treating. It's medieval. It's as if they really believe the ghouls come out at night.

Yep. It has. Dramatically. That's why parents are, for good reason, panicked when their children are out of sight.
The world is a different place from the one in which we freely roamed the neighborhood bagging candy from almost every door.
We had a few Minions last night, but superheros and Frozen Princesses ruled the night.
If he said that with a wink and a nod, I'd have given him all the candy as well.
That's a real life version of a "Thread Winner".
I busted out all my front teeth on one of those asphalt playgrounds when I was nine years old.
Fortunately for Dad, Mom had splurged and bought the schools dental insurance that year. It paid for my false teeth until I was 18.
Half the kids who came to my door were with costumed parents. Scary to open the door and see a costumed 6 foot clown (with child clown). I wouldn't open the door if no kids were with 6 foot costumed adults!
How cute! I enjoy seeing the children having fun and listening to their laughter. People are so creative with their costumes. What enthusiasm!I love Halloween. We went out with some of the grandchildren and had a wonderful evening despite the drizzly weather. It’s a good way for people to meet their neighbors. We were trick-or-treating in a very conservative county and it showed.
People really go all out decorating and making sure the children have fun. Some even turned their garages into mini haunted houses. Bonfires, fog machines, spooky music and adults in costumes handing out candy and calling “Happy Halloween”. It was a blast! My life would be pretty depressing without the family to enjoy these times with and forget for awhile all of the misery of our political situation. I am so thankful.
It’s a good opportunity to teach the children respect for other’s property, not to be greedy and to say “thank you” when someone is kind to you.
I know that happens in many neighborhoods. Sadly it ruins the night.
I was with friends at their place for dinner and a movie last night. While I was there, the doorbell didn’t ring once.
Obviously it isn’t much of a neighbourhood for kids, as some other suburbs of Ottawa had hundreds of rugrats out.
The house was a few blocks away from one of the local universities. When I went home, circa 9:30, there were swarms of students walking around the neighbourhood in costumes. By then my friends had put their treats away and closed up shop. If it had been up to me, I’d have been happy to sit on the front step and toss it at the students as they went past.
Parents were always worried when their kids went out. But, they let them live.
It's far safer now than it has ever been. Don't let the nannies fool you with their scare tactics. The bottom line is that they hate freedom.
Maybe it’s far safer now because parents no longer let kids run free.
When I was a kid, we would leave in the morning and come back home (usually) before dark. No big deal. That is virtually unheard of now.
Fewer opportunities for predators now = lower crime stats.
