From the article: The Airbus A-321 had just taken off from the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, on its way to the Russian city of St Petersburg.

OK, the Manpad idea is still far fetched though. If going to St. Petersburg, it probably was hit in the middle of Egypt, not flying over Syria or Iraq or even near Israel.

It went down right in the middle of the ISIS of Egypt’s stronghold.
