Why is Sanders always presented as an "independent" when everyone knows, and he even calls himself, a Socialist?

Doesn't that refer to his registration?

I don’t know. Is he ashamed to register himself as a Socialist? I know a lot of Liberals who call themselves “independents” because they are too ashamed to call themselves “Liberals.” (Thanks to Ronald Reagan)
